Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

The appearance of ageing eyelids is a common concern among patients, and it is usually caused by loose skin and fat, as well as fat herniation. This results in an aged, sad, or tired appearance. It occurs as the soft tissues of the eyelid lose their elastic properties and structural integrity as they age. Furthermore, the fatty compartments of the face change over time, becoming more prominent in some areas while becoming less prominent in others. Some patients with severe conditions may present with visual obstruction. Other systemic conditions that can cause sagging eyelids must be carefully evaluated by the treating surgeon to ensure that patients receive the appropriate surgery.

In fact, in addition to systemic conditions, the entire periorbital unit must be evaluated, including brow position, fat distribution, globe projection, skin quality, and eyelid tone.

Blepharoplasty surgery is an effective method for removing excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. The upper eyelid incision is carefully hidden in the eyelid crease. If no excess skin is required for excision of the lower eyelid, the incision can be placed on the inside of the lower lid, avoiding a visible scar. Eyelid surgery can also be used to deepen the eyelid crease or to create one in patients who lack one.

Procedure

Surgery is typically performed in an outpatient setting. If only the upper eyelid is being treated, it may be possible to use only local anaesthetic. Patients are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure if a local anaesthetic is used. There will be some pressure and movement, but nothing painful.

If surgery on the lower lid is also required, patients are treated in an outpatient facility under general anaesthesia. They will be asked for a family member or friends to drive them home. We also recommend that you have a friend or family member accompany you the first night after surgery.

Patients must stop smoking at number of weeks before and after surgery in order to have this surgery. This will aid in healing and reduce the likelihood of infection. Medications such as blood thinners must also be discontinued at appropriate. Intervals prior to surgery, which Dr. Szeto will discuss with you. Herbal supplements, such as ginkgo and fish oil, should also be avoided before surgery because they increase the risk of bleeding. Following eyelid surgery, Dr. Szeto will usually prescribe a short course of antibiotics.

Cold compresses are applied to the eyelids after surgery, and antibiotic ointment is applied to the suture line. Lubricating eyedrops can be used to prevent dryness and irritation of the eyes. For 7-10 days, no makeup can be worn around the incision. You should be out of work for 1-2 weeks.

What to Expect

Candidates

Individuals who are reasonably healthy and do not have advanced medical problems or complex vision problems are ideal candidates. Patients with eye disease, such as Grave's disease, glaucoma, dry eye, chronic tearing, and so on, may experience worse post-operative symptoms. While some of these patients may still be candidates, it will be determined by the severity of their pre-operative symptoms and other factors discussed during your consultation.

Risks

Most blepharoplasty complications, such as bleeding and infection, are uncommon and easily treated. Any surgery near the eye has an extremely low, but not zero, risk of hemorrhage leading to blindness. Dr. Szeto will advise you on what to look out for after surgery, and you will contact him if you have any concerns.

It is normal to have some bruising and swelling after surgery, which usually resolves in 10-14 days. It is common to experience minor discomfort, which can be alleviated with Tylenol and Advil. If you experience any unusual or severe pain, you can contact the clinic at any time.

Prior to your consent, the risks of surgery will be discussed.

It is important that you ask Dr. Szeto all of your questions directly.
